Grand Opening – Robert W. Saunders, Sr. Library

Located on the edge of Ybor City and north of the historic Union Train Station near downtown Tampa, Robert W. Saunders Sr. Public Library serves as a hub for the diverse surrounding community. Originally built in 1933 and updated in the 1960’s, the existing library was demolished to make way for a redesigned 21st century facility providing a canvas for local history.

Great care was taken to preserve and relocate a 50-foot wall art mural from the existing library. The mural is prominently located on the exterior wall facing the busy Nebraska Avenue. The new two-story design provides patrons with state-of-the-art technology, access to public computers, and wifi connectivity. Honoring the late Robert W. Saunders, Sr., the library also contains space for displaying art and history local to the surrounding Ybor City Historical District and Barrio Latino District, as well as large public meeting spaces. “Libraries are a lot more than just books… there are all kinds of experiences here for the young and old” said Fred Hearns, President, Robert W. Saunders Sr. Library Foundation.
