Construction has started for Orange County Public School’s Apopka Elementary School. The school was reaching high capacity rates while the outdated campus layout and inefficient car/bus loop were not efficiently serving the growing student population. Harvard Jolly was tasked by Orange County Public Schools to renovate the school by demolishing and adding updated classroom buildings and reconfiguring the traffic pattern.
The new construction consists of: two story classroom building and one story classroom wing; administration building; dining; kitchen; media center; central energy plant; tennis courts; pre-kindergarten playground and elementary playground; and a covered play area.
The existing 25,000 square foot, two story 20-classroom building will undergo minimal renovations, including new technology.
Located on a busy street corner, vehicular access to the school was funneled through an off-road, causing major traffic delays during prime student pick-up and drop-off hours. The Harvard Jolly team developed multiple schemes to improve the function of the car and bus loop pattern, even working with the local municipality to ensure the most efficient design.
