Harvard Jolly Architecture's design for Sarasota County's new Gulf Gate Library was officially unveiled on Saturday, January 24th. Pictured at the grand opening are Harvard Jolly's Ward Friszolowski, Amy Weber, Phil Trezza, and 'Nola Davidson. Also pictured is Willis A. Smith Construction's Wade Wolfe.
The two-story, 26,000 SF features the latest trends in library design including an automated book-sorting technology, "hearing loop" for the hearing impaired, exterior reading areas and WiFi access throughout the facility.
The aesthetics of the library are intended to reflect the Craftsman style of architecture endemic to the Sarasota area. Passive design elements have also shaped the design, including the north facing clerestory glass at the prominent entry tower, which will allow natural diffused light into the main lobby and upper floor. Sustainable design features include LED lighting, a displacement ventilation system, a magnetic bearing chiller, water efficient fixtures, locally produced and recycled building materials, and electric vehicle charging stations. The project is on track to receive a LEED silver certification.
"We are confident that the welcoming environment and exciting new amenities at the Gulf Gate Public Library will be just what the community has been hoping for," said Sarabeth Kalajian, Sarasota County's Director of Libraries and Historical Resources.
