University of South Florida Crescent Hill Parking Facility

Tampa, FL

University of South Florida | 300,000 SF, 918 spaces | 1997

The Crescent Hill Parking Facility at the University of South Florida in Tampa is designed to act as more than just a parking garage—it is designed to serve as a major pedestrian link. The 918-space facility is adjacent to the Marshall Student Center, a cluster of dormitories and the USF Student Bookstore. The 300,000 square foot, six story garage has a three-bay system with the center bay acting as the transition from floor to floor.

Since the site handles a great deal of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic, a raised pedestrian bridge encircles the garage on two sides to completely separate pedestrians from vehicles that enter and exit the facility. Security was also of prime importance to USF. To ensure that passing pedestrians have full view into the facility, the exterior precast panels were shortened in height and included decorative handrails. Stairwells and elevators are glass enclosed, and there are panic buttons and closed-circuit security cameras throughout the facility.

The facility won an Honorable Mention Award for its creative design by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute in January 1998. The Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission also recognized the project with an Award of Merit in the Institutional Facility category in its Community Design Award competition in June 1998.
