Natural Sciences Complex

Sarasota, FL

New College of Florida | 47,658 SF | 2001

Named for Rolland V. Heiser, a New College of Florida Trustee and former Foundation president, the 47,658 square foot building houses classrooms and laboratories for chemistry, biology, computer science, physics, and mathematics.

The complex was designed to blend in with existing Mediterranean Revival architecture on campus, as well as reflect the campus’s modern structures. Some of the building’s design features include a barrel tile roof, stucco walls, clerestory windows and sky-lit lobby. The all-concrete framing of the building makes it nearly vibration-free, which was a requirement of the Physics Department.

Special equipment within the building includes a scanning electron microscope for biology research, and a 24-station chemistry teaching lab with transparent fume hoods that allow panoramic observation for chemistry and biology experiments. The physics lab contains a High-Resolution Raman Spectrograph for analyzing pigments in ancient vessels and paintings.
