Edison State College
Classroom Building U

Ft. Myers, FL

Edison State College | 45,300 SF | September 2011

In 2011, Harvard Jolly designed a new 2-story, 45,300 square foot classroom building for Edison State College's Lee Campus in Fort Myers. Building U features 17 classrooms that can accommodate 700 students, with 3 pairs of classrooms divided by folding partitions, which allows for the flexibility to teach 80 to 100 students at one time. Contemporary instructional technology was integrated throughout to allow for video conferencing and web-based courses. The central anchoring element of the building is a 4,000 square foot multi-purpose room large enough for 300 people. Additionally, Building U houses a dean's suite with educational offices, faculty offices and workspace, and a curriculum library.

The building was sited within the campus to receive most people entering from the northeast, so the design addresses that axial connection with a dramatic curved glass entry façade. Once inside, occupants are greeted to a 2-story tall lobby, outfitted with flat screen monitors and two sweeping grand stairs with glass railings that provide access to the upper level.

Completed in 14 months, the project's design and construction were fast-tracked to ensure completion before the start of the fall semester. Building U is targeted to achieve LEED Gold Certification through the USGBC.
